Artists Just Wanna Have FUN!

A common theme I hear from most creative folk (and which I sing constantly myself!) is the lack of time to do the things that thrill us.  In the midst of such a conversation with my artist friend, Shannon, a idea was hatched to provide an outlet for that frustration - minus a deadline or lots of rules!  We're doing a round robin art project.  Each of us is to prepare a base, a ground, on which to build a piece of art.  Then we trade it back and forth, each adding a layer and returning it to the other person for the next layer.  Shannon got her ground ready first - a small square canvas on which she oil painted a wonderful tree.  The tree passed to me and I added fluid acrylic washes in  light red-orange and gold-toned yellow.  Here is is after the first two steps.

Back to Shannon next and she added washes of metallic paints in blue, gold and bronze among the branches and along the sides.

My turn....I added collage pieces of painted paper towel, toned down with a gesso wash, then tiny dancing figures and stars in the branches with handmade stamps, accented with pen lining.  Back to Shannon tomorrow!

Not only is this fun, but collaborating on a piece pushes you in new directions.  It's also an opportunity to experiment with techniques and processes you may have read about or seen, but not had the chance to try.  AND - if you don't like the results, there's always the next layer!!  Tag, Shannon, you're it!!

Stay tuned!  More layers to come!
